OUT-OF-STATE SAME SEX COUPLES CAN NOW LEGALLY WED
IN MASSACHUSETTS

Governor Deval Patrick signed a bill into law on July 31, 2008, repealing a 1913 ruling prohibiting Massachusetts from performing marriages for out-of-state couples whose marriages would not be legal in their home states. With this repeal, Massachusetts becomes the second state, after California, to allow same sex couples from other states to legally wed.

Massachusetts was the first state ever to legalize same sex marriage in May 2004. The law, at that time, only applied to those residing in this state and did not extend to out-of-state couples.   Now everyone can legally marry in Massachusetts!!!

As Governor Patrick signed the new law,  "It's a good day," he said, declaring that the repeal will "confirm a simple truth. That is, in Massachusetts, equal means equal."
